TOI-178 is an orange K-type dwarf (about 0.65 solar masses, 4,316 K, 0.66 solar radii), 62.7 light-years from Earth. TOI-178's outer planets form a Laplace-like resonant chain, even though neighboring worlds have very different densities. The system hosts 6 confirmed planets on orbits ranging from 1.9 days to 20.7 days. With 6 confirmed worlds, TOI-178 is a densely packed system whose resonances, spacing, and formation history are active research topics. Mutual gravitational tugs between the planets can slowly reshape their orbits, preserving clues to the system's assembly. At 1.2 Earth radii, TOI-178 b is a compact world comparable in size to rocky planets in our Solar System.
