Upsilon Andromedae was the first multi-planet system discovered around a main-sequence star, with three giants on mutually inclined, eccentric orbits. ups And b is a 0.69-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 4.6 days, at 0.059 AU from its star, discovered in 1996 via radial velocity. ups And c is a 1.98-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 241 days, at 0.828 AU from its star, on an eccentric orbit (e ≈ 0.26), discovered in 1999 via radial velocity. Mutual gravitational tugs between the planets can slowly reshape their orbits, preserving clues to the system's assembly.
