PDS 70 is an orange K-type dwarf (about 0.98 solar masses, 4,109 K), 370 light-years from Earth. PDS 70 is the first system with confirmed protoplanets: two giants caught still forming inside a gap in the disk. PDS 70 b is a 3.20-Jupiter-mass companion, at 20.8 AU from its star, and an equilibrium temperature near 1,392 K, on an eccentric orbit (e ≈ 0.17), discovered in 2018 via direct imaging. PDS 70 c is a 7.50-Jupiter-mass companion, at 34.3 AU from its star, and an equilibrium temperature near 1,054 K, discovered in 2019 via direct imaging. Direct imaging revealed these planets because they are young, massive, and widely separated from their star, appearing bright in infrared light against the glare.
