HAT-P-17 is a Sun-like G-type star (about 0.92 solar masses, 5,337 K, 0.84 solar radii), 92.4 light-years from Earth. HAT-P-17 c is a 3.40-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 15.3 years, at 5.600 AU from its star, on an eccentric orbit (e ≈ 0.39), discovered in 2012 via radial velocity. HAT-P-17 b is a 0.58-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 10.3 days, on an eccentric orbit (e ≈ 0.35), discovered in 2012 via transit. The planet betrayed itself through the star's reflex motion — a technique that first revealed worlds around Sun-like stars in the 1990s and remains a workhorse of exoplanet discovery.
