GJ 849 is a cool M-dwarf (about 0.45 solar masses, 3,467 K, 0.45 solar radii), 8.8 light-years from Earth. GJ 849 b is a 0.89-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 5.27 years, at 2.320 AU from its star, discovered in 2006 via radial velocity. GJ 849 c is a 0.99-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 16.4 years, at 4.950 AU from its star, on an eccentric orbit (e ≈ 0.09), discovered in 2014 via radial velocity. Mutual gravitational tugs between the planets can slowly reshape their orbits, preserving clues to the system's assembly.
