GJ 1132 is a cool M-dwarf (about 0.19 solar masses, 3,229 K, 0.22 solar radii), 41 light-years from Earth. GJ 1132 b is a nearby rocky planet and a test case for whether a world can lose its atmosphere and grow a new one. GJ 1132 b is a 1.8-Earth-mass planet, with an orbital period of 1.6 days, at 0.016 AU from its star, and an equilibrium temperature near 584 K, discovered in 2015 via transit. GJ 1132 c is a 2.9-Earth-mass planet, with an orbital period of 8.9 days, on an eccentric orbit (e ≈ 0.19), discovered in 2018 via radial velocity. The planet was found when it crossed the face of its star, producing periodic dips in brightness that reveal its size and orbital period to space-based photometry.
