WASP-96 is a Sun-like G-type star (about 1.06 solar masses, 5,540 K, 1.05 solar radii), 352 light-years from Earth. WASP-96 b is a relatively clear hot Saturn and one of the planets in JWST's first exoplanet spectroscopy results. WASP-96 b is a 0.48-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 3.4 days, at 0.045 AU from its star, and an equilibrium temperature near 1,285 K, discovered in 2014 via transit. The inner world is a hot Jupiter — a gas giant hugging its star at a fraction of Mercury's distance — a class that forced astronomers to rethink how giant planets form and migrate inward.
