WASP-12 is a Sun-like F-type star (about 1.32 solar masses, 6,265 K, 1.69 solar radii), 427 light-years from Earth. WASP-12 b is so close to its star that tidal forces distort it into an egg shape, and it may be spiralling inward toward eventual destruction within a few million years. WASP-12 b is a planet with 22.0 Earth radii, with an orbital period of 1.1 days, at 0.023 AU from its star, discovered in 2008 via transit. WASP-12 b skims its star closer than Mercury orbits the Sun.
