TrES-2 is a Sun-like G-type star (about 1.36 solar masses, 5,850 K, 1.12 solar radii), 215 light-years from Earth. TrES-2 b is the darkest known exoplanet, reflecting less than about one percent of the light that hits it. TrES-2 b is a 1.49-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 2.5 days, discovered in 2006 via transit. The inner world is a hot Jupiter — a gas giant hugging its star at a fraction of Mercury's distance — a class that forced astronomers to rethink how giant planets form and migrate inward. The planet's large radius (15.2 Earth radii) indicates a bloated atmosphere heated by intense stellar radiation.
