TOI-849 is a Sun-like G-type star (about 0.97 solar masses, 5,257 K, 0.97 solar radii), 226 light-years from Earth. TOI-849 b is a dense Neptune in the hot-Neptune desert and a candidate for the exposed core of a stripped giant planet. TOI-849 b is a 0.13-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 18.4 hours, at 0.015 AU from its star, discovered in 2020 via transit. The planet was found when it crossed the face of its star, producing periodic dips in brightness that reveal its size and orbital period to space-based photometry. TOI-849 b skims its star closer than Mercury orbits the Sun. Repeated transit observations constrain the planet's orbital inclination and stellar density, anchoring the system's physical scale.
