OGLE-TR-56 is a Sun-like F-type star (about 1.23 solar masses, 6,050 K, 1.36 solar radii). OGLE-TR-56 b was the first exoplanet discovered by the transit method, rather than confirmed in transit after a radial-velocity detection. OGLE-TR-56 b is a 1.39-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 1.2 days, at 0.024 AU from its star, and an equilibrium temperature near 2,212 K, discovered in 2002 via transit. The inner world is a hot Jupiter — a gas giant hugging its star at a fraction of Mercury's distance — a class that forced astronomers to rethink how giant planets form and migrate inward. OGLE-TR-56 b skims its star closer than Mercury orbits the Sun.
