MOA-2012-BLG-505L is a Sun-like G-type star (about 0.10 solar masses, 5,778 K), 7,210 light-years from Earth. MOA-2012-BLG-505L b is a 6.7-Earth-mass planet, at 0.900 AU from its star, discovered in 2017 via microlensing. Microlensing detections occur when a foreground star's gravity briefly magnifies a background source, revealing planets that are otherwise too faint and distant to observe directly. MOA-2012-BLG-505L b circles its star within the inner habitable zone. Its low mass makes MOA-2012-BLG-505L b a Neptune- or super-Earth-class world rather than a gas giant. At roughly 7,210 light-years, MOA-2012-BLG-505L lies far beyond the nearest stars yet remains reachable to large survey telescopes.
