MOA-2009-BLG-387L is a Sun-like G-type star (about 0.19 solar masses, 5,778 K), 5,690 light-years from Earth. MOA-2009-BLG-387L b is a 2.60-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 5.42 years, at 1.800 AU from its star, discovered in 2010 via microlensing. Microlensing detections occur when a foreground star's gravity briefly magnifies a background source, revealing planets that are otherwise too faint and distant to observe directly. MOA-2009-BLG-387L b orbits at roughly the distance of Mars from the Sun. At roughly 5,690 light-years, MOA-2009-BLG-387L lies far beyond the nearest stars yet remains reachable to large survey telescopes.
