Luhman 16 A is a Sun-like G-type star (about 0.03 solar masses, 5,778 K). Luhman 16 b is a 29.4-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 26.5 years, at 3.520 AU from its star, on an eccentric orbit (e ≈ 0.34), discovered in 2017 via direct imaging. Direct imaging revealed these planets because they are young, massive, and widely separated from their star, appearing bright in infrared light against the glare. The planet's marked eccentricity suggests past scattering events or perturbations from unseen companions. Luhman 16 b circles in the outer system, comparable to the Jupiter region.
