KMT-2017-BLG-2197L is a Sun-like G-type star (about 0.36 solar masses, 5,778 K), 7,800 light-years from Earth. KMT-2017-BLG-2197L b is a 8.84-Jupiter-mass companion, at 15.9 AU from its star, discovered in 2025 via microlensing. Microlensing detections occur when a foreground star's gravity briefly magnifies a background source, revealing planets that are otherwise too faint and distant to observe directly. KMT-2017-BLG-2197L b orbits far from its host star. At 8.8 Jupiter masses, the companion lies near the dividing line between giant planets and brown dwarfs. At roughly 7,800 light-years, KMT-2017-BLG-2197L lies far beyond the nearest stars yet remains reachable to large survey telescopes.
