Kepler-22 is a Sun-like G-type star (about 0.86 solar masses, 5,596 K, 0.87 solar radii), 195 light-years from Earth. Kepler-22 b was the first planet Kepler confirmed inside a habitable zone, orbiting a Sun-like star every 290 days. Kepler-22 b is a 9.1-Earth-mass planet, with an orbital period of 290 days, at 0.812 AU from its star, and an equilibrium temperature near 279 K, on an eccentric orbit (e ≈ 0.72), discovered in 2011 via transit. At least one planet may receive an Earth-like flux of starlight, placing this system on the short list of potentially habitable worlds worth detailed atmospheric study. The planet's marked eccentricity suggests past scattering events or perturbations from unseen companions.
