Kepler-16 is an orange K-type dwarf (about 0.69 solar masses, 4,450 K, 0.65 solar radii), 75.1 light-years from Earth. Kepler-16 b was the first transiting planet found orbiting two stars, a Tatooine world that eclipses both members of the binary. Kepler-16 b is a 0.33-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 229 days, at 0.705 AU from its star, discovered in 2011 via transit. The planet was found when it crossed the face of its star, producing periodic dips in brightness that reveal its size and orbital period to space-based photometry. Kepler-16 b circles its star within the inner habitable zone. The planet's large radius (8.4 Earth radii) indicates a bloated atmosphere heated by intense stellar radiation.
