Kepler-1520 is an orange K-type dwarf (about 0.76 solar masses, 4,677 K, 0.71 solar radii), 608 light-years from Earth. Kepler-1520 b is a disintegrating planet: a dusty tail makes its transit depth and shape change from one orbit to the next. Kepler-1520 b is a planet with 5.8 Earth radii, with an orbital period of 15.7 hours, discovered in 2016 via transit. The planet was found when it crossed the face of its star, producing periodic dips in brightness that reveal its size and orbital period to space-based photometry. At roughly 608 light-years, Kepler-1520 lies far beyond the nearest stars yet remains reachable to large survey telescopes.
