HD 97658 is an orange K-type dwarf (about 0.85 solar masses, 5,212 K, 0.73 solar radii), 21.6 light-years from Earth. HD 97658 b is a 8.3-Earth-mass planet, with an orbital period of 9.5 days, and an equilibrium temperature near 751 K, discovered in 2010 via radial velocity. The planet betrayed itself through the star's reflex motion — a technique that first revealed worlds around Sun-like stars in the 1990s and remains a workhorse of exoplanet discovery. Its low mass makes HD 97658 b a Neptune- or super-Earth-class world rather than a gas giant.
