HD 86081 is a Sun-like F-type star (about 1.21 solar masses, 5,939 K, 1.46 solar radii), 104 light-years from Earth. HD 86081 b is a 1.48-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 2.1 days, at 0.035 AU from its star, discovered in 2006 via radial velocity. The inner world is a hot Jupiter — a gas giant hugging its star at a fraction of Mercury's distance — a class that forced astronomers to rethink how giant planets form and migrate inward. HD 86081 b skims its star closer than Mercury orbits the Sun.
