HD 63454 is an orange K-type dwarf (about 0.42 solar masses, 4,812 K, 0.77 solar radii), 37.7 light-years from Earth. HD 63454 b is a 0.25-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 2.8 days, at 0.040 AU from its star, discovered in 2005 via radial velocity. The planet betrayed itself through the star's reflex motion — a technique that first revealed worlds around Sun-like stars in the 1990s and remains a workhorse of exoplanet discovery. HD 63454 b skims its star closer than Mercury orbits the Sun.
