HD 62509 is an orange K-type dwarf (about 2.00 solar masses, 4,893 K). HD 62509 b is a 2.30-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 1.61 years, at 1.640 AU from its star, discovered in 2006 via radial velocity. The planet betrayed itself through the star's reflex motion — a technique that first revealed worlds around Sun-like stars in the 1990s and remains a workhorse of exoplanet discovery. HD 62509 b orbits at roughly the distance of Mars from the Sun. Long-term spectroscopic monitoring of HD 62509 continues to refine the planet's mass and search for additional companions.
