HD 102956 is an orange K-type dwarf (about 1.66 solar masses, 4,985 K, 4.55 solar radii), 122 light-years from Earth. HD 102956 b is a 0.96-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 6.5 days, at 0.081 AU from its star, discovered in 2010 via radial velocity. The inner world is a hot Jupiter — a gas giant hugging its star at a fraction of Mercury's distance — a class that forced astronomers to rethink how giant planets form and migrate inward. HD 102956 b orbits well inside Earth's distance from the Sun.
