HATS-22 is an orange K-type dwarf (about 0.76 solar masses, 4,803 K, 0.69 solar radii), 230 light-years from Earth. HATS-22 b is a 2.74-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 4.7 days, at 0.050 AU from its star, and an equilibrium temperature near 858 K, on an eccentric orbit (e ≈ 0.08), discovered in 2017 via transit. The inner world is a hot Jupiter — a gas giant hugging its star at a fraction of Mercury's distance — a class that forced astronomers to rethink how giant planets form and migrate inward.
