HAT-P-2 is a Sun-like F-type star (about 1.33 solar masses, 6,380 K, 1.39 solar radii), 128 light-years from Earth. HAT-P-2 b is a massive, eccentric hot Jupiter, so the starlight it receives swings sharply between perihelion and aphelion. HAT-P-2 b is a 8.62-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 5.6 days, at 0.068 AU from its star, on an eccentric orbit (e ≈ 0.52), discovered in 2007 via transit. HAT-P-2 c is a 10.7-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 23.3 years, on an eccentric orbit (e ≈ 0.37), discovered in 2023 via radial velocity. Mutual gravitational tugs between the planets can slowly reshape their orbits, preserving clues to the system's assembly.
