GJ 86 is an orange K-type dwarf (about 0.93 solar masses, 5,182 K, 0.77 solar radii), 10.8 light-years from Earth. GJ 86 b is a 4.42-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 15.8 days, at 0.110 AU from its star, discovered in 1999 via radial velocity. The planet betrayed itself through the star's reflex motion — a technique that first revealed worlds around Sun-like stars in the 1990s and remains a workhorse of exoplanet discovery. GJ 86 b orbits well inside Earth's distance from the Sun.
