GJ 649 is a cool M-dwarf (about 0.51 solar masses, 3,734 K, 0.50 solar radii), 10.4 light-years from Earth. GJ 649 b is a 0.26-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 1.64 years, at 1.112 AU from its star, on an eccentric orbit (e ≈ 0.08), discovered in 2009 via radial velocity. The planet betrayed itself through the star's reflex motion — a technique that first revealed worlds around Sun-like stars in the 1990s and remains a workhorse of exoplanet discovery. GJ 649 b orbits at roughly the distance of Mars from the Sun.
