GJ 486 is a cool M-dwarf (about 0.31 solar masses, 3,317 K, 0.32 solar radii), 8.1 light-years from Earth. GJ 486 b is a hot rocky planet around a nearby red dwarf, observed by JWST to test whether a thin atmosphere can survive. GJ 486 b is a 2.8-Earth-mass planet, with an orbital period of 1.5 days, at 0.017 AU from its star, and an equilibrium temperature near 696 K, discovered in 2021 via radial velocity. The planet betrayed itself through the star's reflex motion — a technique that first revealed worlds around Sun-like stars in the 1990s and remains a workhorse of exoplanet discovery. GJ 486 b skims its star closer than Mercury orbits the Sun.
