gam Cep is an orange K-type dwarf (about 1.27 solar masses, 4,775 K, 4.74 solar radii), 14.1 light-years from Earth. Gamma Cephei Ab is the earliest radial-velocity planet detection to be confirmed, a giant orbiting the primary of a close binary. gam Cep b is a 6.60-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 2.50 years, on an eccentric orbit (e ≈ 0.15), discovered in 2003 via radial velocity. The planet betrayed itself through the star's reflex motion — a technique that first revealed worlds around Sun-like stars in the 1990s and remains a workhorse of exoplanet discovery. The planet's marked eccentricity suggests past scattering events or perturbations from unseen companions.
