70 Vir is a Sun-like G-type star (about 1.09 solar masses, 5,495 K, 1.89 solar radii), 17.9 light-years from Earth. 70 Virginis b, announced in 1996, was one of the first known exoplanets: a massive giant on a markedly eccentric orbit. 70 Vir b is a 7.42-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 117 days, at 0.481 AU from its star, on an eccentric orbit (e ≈ 0.40), discovered in 1996 via radial velocity. The planet betrayed itself through the star's reflex motion — a technique that first revealed worlds around Sun-like stars in the 1990s and remains a workhorse of exoplanet discovery. The planet's marked eccentricity suggests past scattering events or perturbations from unseen companions.
