2MASS J0249-0557 A is a cool M-dwarf (about 0.05 solar masses, 2,859 K), 66.1 light-years from Earth. 2MASS J0249-0557 c is a 11.4-Jupiter-mass companion, and an equilibrium temperature near 1,723 K, discovered in 2018 via direct imaging. Direct imaging revealed these planets because they are young, massive, and widely separated from their star, appearing bright in infrared light against the glare. The planet's large radius (17.4 Earth radii) indicates a bloated atmosphere heated by intense stellar radiation. With an equilibrium temperature around 1,723 K, the dayside atmosphere is hot enough to vaporise many common minerals.
