11 UMi is an orange K-type dwarf (about 2.78 solar masses, 4,213 K, 29.8 solar radii), 125 light-years from Earth. 11 UMi b is a 14.7-Jupiter-mass companion, with an orbital period of 1.41 years, at 1.530 AU from its star, on an eccentric orbit (e ≈ 0.08), discovered in 2009 via radial velocity. The planet betrayed itself through the star's reflex motion — a technique that first revealed worlds around Sun-like stars in the 1990s and remains a workhorse of exoplanet discovery. 11 UMi b orbits at roughly the distance of Mars from the Sun.
