The figure-eight choreography is one of the most celebrated discoveries in celestial mechanics. In 1993, Alain Chenciner and Richard Montgomery proved that three equal point masses can follow a single closed curve shaped like a figure eight, repeating the pattern forever under Newtonian gravity. Each mass traces the same path, offset by one-third of a period from its companions, so the system maintains three-fold symmetry throughout. Before this proof, many mathematicians doubted that such a periodic three-body solution existed at all. The choreography has since become a benchmark for numerical integrators and a gateway to the wider zoo of n-body periodic orbits found by Simó, Moore, and others.
